ORIGINS OF DENTAL FEAR
Fear is a natural response
towards anything unknown, witch has the potential to
be harmful or threatening.
Any invasion
into a person's private sphere is always seen as a threat. The mouth is naturally
an intimate part of everyone's private sphere. In history Dentistry has
evolved from extremely invasive procedure, particularly directed at this
very part - the Mouth.
That
where dental fear is coming from.

Today, dental treatment options are less
threatening then those applied 200 years ago. However, mainstream dentistry
persists in following a mainly surgical approach.
Such approach is based on sound scientific evidence, but mainly
concerned with 'mechanical repair' of damages caused by dental disease.
E.g. Subsequent Injections and Drilling (Note: this includes the horrible
sound of the drill!) do a great job to render long lasting
quality tooth fillings. However, they are invasive and in the process the main culprits for potential pain
and discomfort in dental practice. Furthermore, if tooth fillings fail,
things like Root canal treatment, Tooth extraction, Crown- & Bridge work
- or even Dentures and the (way too expansive) Implant treatment follows
... More intervention in the mouth, more potential discomfort and pain during
necessary treatment ...
The Experience and Expectation of pain remain the main source
for dental fear...
